THAT STRANGE MEAL

We ate a meal yesterday that was really strange. At least it would be strange to most people. Let me tell you some things about this meal.
It is a meal about a man. This may be the most unique thing about it. The man lived 2,000 years ago. He is alive today.
The meal is eaten on only one day in the week–Sunday, the first day of the week. Our common meals can be eaten on any day of the week, but not this meal.
It includes the giving of thanks–twice. In ordinary meals thanks is given but once. But, in this meal, there are two specific prayers of thanksgiving.
There is never any variety in the menu in this strange meal. It is always the same without deviation. It is unleavened bread and grape juice–fruit of the vine.
There is a particular order of eating in this meal. It is always the bread first, and then the fruit of the vine. In common meals, the order of eating means nothing.
Typically there is only a small amount of bread and a little bit of grape juice that is consumed. This meal, you see, is not about satisfying physical hunger or thirst.
This meal is a memorial to the man who instituted it. It is to remember the suffering in His body and the shedding of His blood.
There is truly no other meal like it. Wouldn’t you agree that it is a strange meal?

THE FINAL WORD

Indeed, that meal is strange to the world, yet it is one that is not at all strange to the people of God. It is something that Christians partake of each first day of the week ().
Though strange to the world, the Lord’s Supper is special to us as a memorial to the one who died for us ().
What a marvelous meal! Not a meal to satisfy the hunger or thirst of our bodies, but one that refreshes our spirits and nourishes our souls. In this strange meal we reflect upon our Savior and cultivate our desire to be with Him forever.
Aren’t you glad you are a Christian? Aren’t you glad you are able to partake of this marvelous meal each first day of the week? Praise be to our God!
Blessings to you my dear friends.
