Those were the words of Benjamin Lee, my co-worker. It was about four years ago. Ben and I and a couple of other men were looking at some passages about purpose in life. Our purpose. Yours and mine. What does God want from us? What are we supposed to do? Why do we exist?
It is easy to say, “We should obey God” or “We should trust the Lord.” Those things are true. But I think they state our duty rather than our purpose.
Why should we obey God? Why should we trust Him?
We might answer, “So we can be right with Him. So we can go to heaven.” Those things are also true. But to what end? Is it all about us? Is the focus of all things on us and our well-being and salvation?
It was when Ben and I looked at the context of that we came up with a life-changing answer. The context of that verse is about the church which is “according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The eternal purpose of the church is expressed in .
“…to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
The church exists to give glory to God. We are part of the church. Our ultimate purpose is to glorify God.
Let that sink in. Once you grasp this concept, it sheds new light on the purpose of your life. On the reason why you exist.
Once you get it firm in your mind that your purpose in life is to give glory to God…
“that changes everything!”
It will change how you view your family, worship, your friends, enemies–everything. Think about that today. Note the Scriptures below.
THE FINAL WORD
“Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever.” ()
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” ()
“He has made us to be a kingdom of priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” ()
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” ()
Now, go do it. Give God glory! That is your purpose in life.
