Those are the words of Jesus in . Jesus was referring to the incident in when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Lot and his family were told to escape the city and not look back.
Jesus used the case of Lot’s family to warn His disciples about the destruction of Jerusalem. The disciples were to flee the city quickly when they saw that its destruction was imminent (). To linger, or worse, to turn back could be fatal.
It was indeed fatal for Lot’s wife when she turned back (). She perished. The sad thing is that it didn’t have to happen. She should have been saved. But, instead, she perished.
She perished in spite of having a righteous husband (). A righteous husband is a blessing. But she couldn’t be saved just because he was righteous.
She perished even though she was warned of danger (). Why didn’t she heed the warning? Why do people not heed God’s warning today? ().
She perished even though she made an effort to be saved (). There are lots of folks who will go part way with God. Half-way obedience is disobedience!
She perished even though she was separated from Sodom (). She did not die in the city! But was her heart still in that city? Where are our hearts?
She perished because of her disobedient unbelief ().
Unbelief is the sin that is at the root of every sin. Her unbelief was demonstrated by a disobedient look.
Her sin was rebellion against God. She perished because of that.
THE FINAL WORD
It didn’t have to happen, did it? She was outside the city and if she had just continued to obey God, she would have been alright.
Lot’s wife serves as a stern warning against disobedience. If you or I have any thoughts that disobedience really doesn’t matter to God–we need to give up those thoughts now!
And, if you are one of those people who has been putting off obedience to Jesus, why not let Lot’s wife serve to push you toward God? Wouldn’t it be something awful on the judgment day to be on the wrong side of things–and to stand next to Lot’s wife in that line headed for hell!
Lot’s wife could say to you, “Didn’t you know what happened to me? Didn’t you listen?”
What would you say to her?
Think about it, my dear friend!
Have a great day, all day!
