JOSHUA – A CASE STUDY IN LEADERSHIP (Part Two)

In our previous thoughts on leadership we identified Joshua as one of the great leaders in God’s kingdom. Yet, he was unable to influence the people of Israel to do right when they came to the Promised Land (). The ten spies who were in opposition influenced the people to rebel against God.
Looking at the larger picture of Joshua’s life, that incident in only emphasizes what a great leader he was. Joshua–and Caleb–were men of persistent faith who did not change their position because of hostility from others.
While it might have been easy to give up as he faced adversaries, Joshua did not weaken nor yield. Even after the ten spies had given their terrible report, Joshua said to the people, “The Lord is with us!” (). It can really be discouraging when the enemies of righteousness are loud and numerous–as they were in this case. We can be tempted to fold and just give in. That is what we must not do. Joshua still insisted that Israel could be victorious in taking the land.
What did Joshua get for his faith in God? He and Caleb almost got a stoning from the people (). Had the glory of the Lord not appeared in the tent of meeting, these two men might have lost their lives!
Leaders learn that opposition will come even when what you are doing is absolutely right. In your work for God you might do things that are wonderful, grand and noble. But, just remember that someone, somewhere, will find reason to criticize you for it. Get used to it. And don’t give up doing right. Not. Ever. Never.
THE FINAL WORD
What made Joshua and Caleb different from the other spies who went into the land? I think the answer is in .
“But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land…”
Of course, what God said of Caleb applies equally well to Joshua. Two things are seen in this verse.
1. “…a different spirit…” The word “spirit” has to do with disposition. They had the right disposition that was needed to carry out God’s work.
2. “…followed me fully…” Obedience to God leads to victory!
While it would be forty years later that they took the Promised Land, what did all the people eventually learn?
They learned that Joshua and Caleb were right all along!
