David Banning presented a lesson at Dowlen Road Church with that title last Sunday night. It was presented primarily for young people and their parents.
Some of my readers today will immediately ask themselves, “Why?” “Why would any preacher present such a lesson? Especially when there is not a single verse in the New Testament that ever condemns dancing. Look it up for yourself. You can’t find ‘dancing’ in any list of sins in the New Testament.”
That’s the way some folks react to any lesson that raises questions about dancing. They seem to not know that there are principles taught in the New Testament that may be violated by what goes on at a typical high school dance. Words like “lascivious” (KJV) or “lewd” (NKJV) come to mind here. Read these passages if you need some help on this: , , , and .
David Banning asked three questions in the course of his lesson:
1. “What do I want?” Is my desire to please the world or to please God? If I want to be popular with the fickle crowd, then I will probably go to the dance without considering any other factors. If I want to please God, there are some things I should consider before deciding whether or not to go.
2. “What’s going on?” As a parent (or grandparent) do I really know what is going on at school dances? Frankly, most don’t know. David could have shown us a video in his PowerPoint presentation. He could have shown what goes on. But that would have been inappropriate and indecent. If it is indecent to show to a crowd of Christians, then how does it become decent for a Christian to engage in it?
3. “Is this a good thing?” God wants His children to be special people, holy, and living above the wickedness of this world. Nobody with a spiritual mind–nobody–could say that what goes on at the typical school dance is a good thing.
THE FINAL WORD
I will close today’s thoughts with two things.
1. Brother Banning showed several schools that have brought their annual dances to an end. That’s right. They quit having them. Why? Because of the inappropriate behavior that takes place at the dances.
Check that for yourself. Type “schools ban dancing” into Google search. On the first page of hits, it will bring up a news report that is worth watching. One comment in the news report talked about the importance of parental support on this issue.
2. Banning’s lesson can be viewed in its entirety at dowlenroad.com. Just type “dancing” in the search box on the home page.
Blessings to you, my wise friends,
