The Chicago Cubs are a team of destiny. At least, according to the Michael J. Fox movie, “Back To The Future II.” That movie was released in 1989 and it predicted that the Cubbies would win the World Series in 2015.
The Michael J. Fox character, Marty McFly, travels to the year 2015 and picks up a copy of a sports almanac. He then travels back to his own time (1989). The almanac proves profitable as it gives the scores for all games for the next 26 years.
In the movie, the almanac showed the Cubs beating Miami in the 2015 series. When the movie was made, Miami had no baseball team. The Miami Marlins, however, did join the National League in 1993 (that’s the wrong league if they are to play the Cubs in the series).
The Cubs are indeed in the playoffs this year. But they have some work to do if they are to win the World Series. They lost on Sunday to the New York Mets 4-1. Chicago is down 2-0 in the National League Championship Series. They now have to win four of the next five games against the Mets to get to the World Series. The poor Cubs have not won the World Series since 1908.
Though I would not be unhappy if the Cubs were to win it all, it may just be that “Back To The Future II” did not make a good prediction. We will see.
A FINAL WORD
It is only God who knows the future. You don’t. I don’t. And movie producers don’t. That’s one of the reasons why Proverbs 15:1 says what it does. It warns us, “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”
No man knows what the future may bring. Yet, there is a God in heaven who not only knows the future, He controls the future. Listen to Isaiah 41:22-23 as God challenges the idols and the idol worshipers.
“Let them bring forth and show us what will happen; Let them show the former things, what they were, That we may consider them, And know the latter end of them; Or declare to us things to come. Show the things that are to come hereafter, That we may know that you are gods; Yes, do good or do evil, That we may be dismayed and see it together.”
The idols and their worshipers could do none of these things. Yet, listen to what God says about His power to address future events in Isaiah 46:9-11.
“Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’ Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.”
Note the last two segments:
“I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass.”
“I have purposed it; I will also do it.”
God does more than merely know the future. He can plan it, control it, and make it happen.
That is the God whom we serve. He knows. He controls. He is to be trusted.
Blessings to all,
