A THIEF, A RULER, AND YOU

The man is surely the most popular thief of all time. He has been the subject of countless sermons. He is the man upon whom millions have staked their salvation.
You may ask, “Why would anyone stake their salvation on a thief?” It is really kind of strange, but it is what many have done. The thief is the man in . He died alongside of Jesus.
He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Jesus replied, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
There is no doubt about this man’s eternal destiny. Jesus declared that the man would be with Him in Paradise. Saved! Case closed!
But why is this man popular? [Read more…]

MY SERVANT

Last Monday in this spot I wrote about one of the prophetic names given to Jesus. The prophet Isaiah identified Him as the “Prince of Peace” ().
Jesus, the Prince of Peace, has been able to accomplish something no other ruler has ever achieved. He established a kingdom of peace. He brings peace to those who follow Him.
Another powerful and significant term used in Isaiah to describe Jesus is found in .
“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
This is one of the many prophecies Isaiah spoke concerning the coming of the Messiah. The prophet foretold the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus 700 years before He was born. [Read more…]

“IF I WERE THE DEVIL”

Today’s “Thursday’s Thoughts” come from Paul Harvey, fabled radio newscaster for more than 60 years! The thoughts below are unedited from a Paul Harvey newscast. These words were first printed in Harvey’s newspaper column in 1964. What Harvey wrote and spoke back then is America today! To hear Harvey read this, click below.

PAUL HARVEY’S “IF I WERE THE DEVIL” TRANSCRIPT

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of it’s real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree – Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first – I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’ [Read more…]

“PRINCE OF PEACE”

That’s what He is called in .

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called…Prince of Peace.”

Brother Benjamin Lee and I used that verse last night in our study on the Kingdom of God. The text is prophetic of the first coming of Christ. It’s about His birth, His coming into the world. It’s about what He would be–a prince who reigns in peace.

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, has been able to accomplish something no other ruler has ever achieved. He established a kingdom of peace. Isaiah mentioned that peace in when he talked about the establishment of the Kingdom of Christ.

“…they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”
This text is not saying that there would never again be wars among the various countries governed by men. I understand it to mean that those who come from the differing nations into the Kingdom of Christ would be at peace with one another. That is most clearly seen in the case of Jews and Gentiles–those who formerly had been at odds with one another. The Apostle Paul spoke of those two as he made his point in (RSV).

“…that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both (Jew and Gentile–md) to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end.”

When people submit to the Prince of Peace they are reconciled to God in the one body (the church). They are brought together in unity with one another. Thus, the hostility that once existed is now gone. Hostility. Gone.

That text tells us something about the relationships that ought to exist among God’s children in His family–the church. Peace. No hostility. Unity. That’s what following our great Prince produces. [Read more…]

THE ANSWER TO VIOLENCE

Blog: Max Dawson

It was the only sin God specifically mentioned when He spoke of the destruction of the world in Noah’s time. I am sure there were many other sins that brought on the great flood. But violence is the only one noted in .

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”

Our nation has seen too much violence. Wicked, unlawful violent acts from any source is unjustified. It is an abomination. It can bring the judgment of God. It did indeed bring judgment in Noah’s time.

What is the answer to the violence in our country? Dozens of voices are heard. But are there any real solutions?

Some say there are no solutions. Others tell us to answer violence with violence. But that only makes things worse.

Until we recognize that violence–and all sin–is a heart problem, there will be very little progress. Another verse from Noah’s time will help us understand. Listen to .

Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Evil hearts produce violence. They did in Noah’s day. They do in ours. Note what Jesus said in the opening line of .

“Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders…”

Evil hearts produce evil thoughts. Evil thoughts produce evil deeds–even murder.

It is a heart problem. Is there a solution? [Read more…]

The Kingdom of God – Part One (Max Dawson)

DINOSAUR VALLEY STATE PARK

Blog: Max Dawson
July 7, 2016

My first trip there was in 1982. I didn’t really know what to expect–except that we had been told there were dinosaur tracks in the river bed there.
The prospect of getting to see actual dino tracks was enough to get my attention. I have been back there more than ten times since that first trip 30+ years ago. Some of the tracks there are so fresh looking that you would think they could have been made yesterday. But they were not.
Other tracks that were highly detailed back in the 1980s have been all but destroyed because of erosion. The continual flow of the Paluxy River over the tracks has worn many of them to the point where they are no longer recognizable. Add to that, the fact that some of the tracks are on ledges (out of the water), and can be stepped on–causing even more damage.
In spite of erosion and breaking of tracks, there is still a large number of very well preserved tracks from three types of dinosaurs. Some tracks are very small, measuring no more than 6-8 inches across. Others measure more than two feet across.
Sometimes the tracks are found in a very clear left-right-left-right pattern. Trails like this are found in at least three or four places in the river.
The question that often arises is this: “Did men and dinosaurs live at the same time.” [Read more…]

FREEDOM

Blog: Max Dawson
July 4, 2016
Guy Hatcher recently posted on his blog at Crosswalk that there are six freedoms we should celebrate on Independence Day.
I don’t know if I ever thought about counting our freedoms. And I don’t know how he came up with six. The Declaration of Independence has a short statement about our freedom to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Those words say a lot about things we should celebrate. The Bill of Rights also gives us cause to celebrate.
It seems to me that all of our freedoms go together. That is, they come like a package. If you take one away, the others are either removed or weakened.
Someone might say, “I am glad we have in America the freedom of religion. I don’t care so much about those other things like freedom of speech, freedom of press or of assembly. I only care that we are free to worship God.”
That kind of thinking is rather shortsighted and fails to understand the nature of freedom. That’s why I said our freedoms come as a package. [Read more…]
