“I DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING!”

Blog: Max Dawson
April 28, 2016

That’s what folks often say when something takes them by surprise. It is an exclamation that says “I wish I would have known.” Most commonly, something like this is said when something bad happens unexpectedly. If they had seen what was coming, maybe they could have avoided it.

But what if it was something good that was coming? That is, there was something beneficial and you didn’t know about it. You could have gained from it, but you just did not know. You didn’t see it coming!

Here are some things that are coming soon that you need to know about! [Read more…]

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE ABOUT MARRIAGE?

Blog: Max Dawson
April 25, 2016

A lady asked me that question a number of years ago. She was a member of the Lord’s church. It is kind of a strange question when you think about it. Does “we” mean the church? That would kind of make us like the other churches; that is, like churches that have come up with a system of beliefs and then expect their members to accept those beliefs.

I said to the lady, “I know what I believe, but I am not sure what you believe.” I answered her question with the “we” meaning the two of us (and not the church).

The only set of beliefs that I hold about marriage is that set that can be clearly identified in the Scriptures. Or, to put it another way. I profess to just believe what the Scriptures teach about marriage. But, I suppose that most religious people might say somewhat the same thing.

But if it is true that all religious people really do believe just what the Scriptures teach about marriage, then we should all be speaking the same thing.

But we do not speak the same thing.

There was a time when most religious people did indeed generally say the same thing about marriage. But no longer. In fact, sometimes it is “Bible believers” who have led the march away from what the Scriptures teach.

And so, today people believe all sorts of things about marriage that are not biblical. Kind of sad.

Below are some things I believe about marriage. I may not know what you believe, but (as with the lady above) I know what I believe. I am persuaded that you should believe these things too. Check them out. [Read more…]

A MISSPELLED MESSAGE–THAT WORKED!

Blog: Max Dawson
April 21, 2016

It supposedly happened back in the 1950’s. A preacher was really trying hard to reach out to wayward members in his congregation. He went so far as to organize a personal evangelism and edification group that met after service on Sunday evening.

He invited everyone in the congregation to attend the group. The objective was to try to contact and encourage those members of the congregation who were hit and miss in their attendance. The preacher wanted to emphasize the need to be faithful.

At the first meeting of the group, a sizable number showed up, including LeRoy, a big old country boy. LeRoy was a new convert and was eager to serve the Lord and cooperate in any way he could. He was a crude fellow, uneducated and rather gruff, but he had a tender heart. The preacher had to give him someone’s name to check on. The participants could write a note, call or visit those who were weak.

The preacher gave LeRoy the name of a local doctor who was a member of the church. He had not been at services for the past three months. No one had been successful in dealing with him. He had made a few promises but never followed through on any of them.

LeRoy wrote this wayward Christian a letter.

On Thursday of that week, the preacher got a short note in the mail. There was a check with the note. It was from the doctor. The note read as follows:

“To preacher Bob. Enclosed you will find a check made out to the church for $1,400. This is to make up for my contributions that I have missed for the past three months. I will be on the front row Sunday morning. I want to be restored to God and the church. By the way, please inform your secretary that there are two “s” in the word worthless; and there is no “c” in the word “skunk.” [Read more…]

THE STORY OF GOD

Blog: Max Dawson
April 18, 2016

I nearly always worry when I write about current events. I try to be careful, lest I unintentionally misrepresent facts about the event. I also worry that a reader will misunderstand my what I have written. My goal on any topic is always to speak truth and point people to God’s word. It is always right regardless of popular opinion. For today’s email, I have included my sources. So check the sources if you want. You will find that what I have written is correct. We live in a world that has gone crazy.

“The Story of God” is one of the highest rated programs ever on the National Geographic Channel. It is hosted by Academy Award winner, Morgan Freeman.

Freeman says he has hopes that the series will unite people of different religions (Source: Christianpost.com). The miniseries follows Freeman to twenty cities in seven different countries in a quest to find answers to the mysteries of faith.

The actor said, “We’re not as different as we might think we are, we’re all seeking the same thing and asking the same questions, and basically coming up with the same ideas about who we are, what we are, and where we are going.”

The series has been described as Morgan Freeman’s personal journey of faith. While that may sound good, it is not likely that his journey ends up at the same place where you might be. [Read more…]

JORDAN SPIETH STILL A WINNER

Blog: Max Dawson
April 14, 2016
The sting is not as bad today as it was last Sunday. I think a lot of folks could feel the pain with Jordan Spieth on Sunday. It was when he put his tee shot into the water on hole number twelve at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. It was even worse when he dumped his second ball into Rae’s Creek. He wound up taking a quadruple bogey, a seven, on that par three hole. Though he had more chances on the last few holes, the tournament was effectively over for Jordan Spieth after the twelfth. He finished in a tie for second place–just as he did in that tourney in 2014. And while he won the Masters last year, the sting of this year’s loss was still very painful for Spieth and for those who were pulling for him.
But Jordan Spieth was still a winner last Sunday. [Read more…]

A CHOICE TOMORROW NIGHT: BELIEF OR UNBELIEF?

Blog: Max Dawson
April 11, 2016
I am presenting two choices this morning. The choices have to do with events tomorrow night (Tuesday, April 12). You might find either choice to be of value.

CHOICE #1: BELIEF. “Creation–A Scientific Perspective” with Dr. H.E. Payne, Jr. This can be viewed online only at dowlenroad.com. This is an encore presentation that was originally done some time ago. I would suggest that it contains some of the very best material you will ever encounter regarding creation and evolution.

In this presentation, Dr. Buddy Payne does an excellent job of discussing legitimate methods of research in this field. He probes the mathematical issues that present great problems for evolutionary theory.

You can view this presentation only at dowlenroad.com tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. Why not get a group together to view it? This is an especially valuable presentation for high school and college students.

NUISANCE CALLS

Blog: Max Dawson
April 7, 2016
Last Wednesday I received a phone call. It was from someone I did not know; the caller ID display indicated it was from “Shirley Emery.” But when I answered, it was a man’s voice. I asked, “Are you Shirley?” The reply was, “No. I am Alex.” I immediately identified the call as a telemarketing call. “Alex’s” voice was foreign, and I could hear lots of other people talking in the background.

I told Alex that I wanted to speak to Shirley. He gave my request no response, but began his canned spiel about how I could save money if I would buy medications from him. I again said, “I want to talk to Shirley,” believing on my part that Shirley was a fictitious name. Alex hung up on me. [Read more…]

LOVE BEFORE FIRST SIGHT

Blog: Max Dawson
April 4, 2016

Have you ever heard of love before first sight? Surely we have all heard of love at first sight. Do you believe in it? Some do and some don’t. My wife and I met on a Tuesday afternoon in 1963. We had our first date that evening. The next evening, on Wednesday, we decided that we would marry. While we did not wed until about seven months later, we made our decision on the second day that we knew each other.

Was it love at first sight? I’m not sure what to call it, but it is not to be recommended in most cases. In our culture it is dangerous to commit to marriage without knowing a person well.

Yet in Bible days, love was not so much an issue before marriage as it is today. It was often the case that you married the person chosen for you. That was the case with Isaac in . Rebekah had been chosen as a wife for him. It seems that he had little or no choice in the matter. In the case of Isaac, he loved the woman he married, rather than married the woman he loved. It was not love at first sight. It was sight, then marriage, then love.

But what about the possibility of love before first sight? [Read more…]
